About Us

Our family, like many across the continent and the whole world, has been displaced from where it originated. People become displaced because of war, famine or work opportunities. When families and nations relocate and integrate, merge and assimilate into new complex societies, a lot of good things that keep a family and nations together are modified or lost.

Urban areas, especially townships, are a complex society that is born out of the coming together of different people from different parts of the world with differnt believes, traditions, cultures and religions. Cultural and religious assimilation results in many families loosing their identities.

Traditional and cultural preservation is essential especially if one is living in a multi-cultural society. Adopting new ways of doing things and abandening the ways of our fore-fathers without deriving real value is as equally bad. Finding a place in the complex society we live in without disengaging from traditional practices sounds better than replacing one system with another.

Bafokeng ba ha Tsele believe that traditional and cultural practices have a role to play in our modern society. We realise and acknowledge the influence and role that Christianity/Islam have played in our society and believe that Christianity/Islam and traditional believe system can co-exist side by side.

We are a family that is on a journey of discovery in which we try to reconstruct and build our past so that we can pass our history to the next generation of Bafokeng. It should be noted that reconstructing the past is no easy as information available to us has been passed from generation to generation orally.
